This morning I saw my friend's tweet. He said that he was meeting this director and the guy handed him the business card with his left hand and my friend was not happy, perceived him as impolite and a misfit. This is a classic cultural 'airbag' here. I grew up having the same upbringing, that you must give and pass things with your right hand. I was always told that the right hand is "the good hand" and the left hand is "the bad hand". So I was told to use my good hand to show respect to others. If I used my left hand, I would be considered a misbehaved impolite kid. How bizarre is that?
Along the way I learn in my life that it is not entirely true. One of my teachers one day gave me a good and logical answer. That the vast majority of people in Asia are right-handed, so their dominant hand is their right hand. Therefore, the vast majority set the rule and the standard that using right hand to pass or give things is the normal way. It is not about politeness or the opposite. It is not about East, West, North, South, Moslem, Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, Judaism, Atheist, Agnostics. Not at all. It is mainly because of the practical reasons. People tend to use their dominant hand to do most of the works. And because the vast majority of people are using their right hand, when somebody use the left hand instead, it looked weird, unusual, different and eventually people tend to see it as impolite way. This situation results in the "good hand" - "bad hand" definition, the vast majority has set the rule and the standard. Those who go against will be perceived as rebels or oppositions. However, the vast majority is not always right. They only own most of the voice, but not the truth.
There is no such thing as "good hand" and "bad hand", both hands are good, and your right hand is not more noble than your left hand. Your politeness does not come from which hand you are using, and human beings should not be judged based on such idea. In my teacher's idea, our left hand is actually more noble than the left one. Why? Because the left hand takes care of the dirty business that the right hand refuses to handle. But then again, that is for the right-handed people. What if you are a left-handed person? What if your dominant hand is your left hand? How are you going to perceive the matter differently?
The classic cultural excuse to justify the usage of right hand as the polite hand happens mainly in Asia. But then if it is your so-called Eastern value, you do not force it to others and then complain when others refuse to adopt it. You do not judge others of being wrong just because you uphold the value that came from certain culture or from the vast majority of people.
Why?
Because we are human beings, and we shouldn't judge or being judged based on which hand we are using to pass on things to others!
That is just so shallow...
